Beginners/Experienced Split 3 Years, 6 Months ago

Early days. I suggest we let it run at least until end of this year's syllabus.
I think the winner of the Beginners section should automatically move to Experienced next season i.e. from October 2009.

As the decision to split our competitions was taken at the last AGM it would be easier to let this run until the next AGM.
However as the forms for members to indicate if they wish to enter the competitions as “beginners” or “experienced” members were issued at the start of this session out with the restrictions of an AGM decision perhaps it would be possible to compose a definition of “beginner” and who decides who the beginners are with out waiting until the next AGM.
Having spoken to some of the members it appears that some find the decision of which category they are in difficult and would perhaps welcome someone else to make the decision.
There seems to be some clouding of the issue by members feeling their technical skills are inadequate leading them to believe that constitutes them being in the beginners category regardless of how long they have been taking photographs.
Some members are natural photographers who do not have to rely heavily on technicalities in capturing a good image. Many are also capable of producing a sizeable inkjet print of reasonable quality themselves without having to take it to the processors. It is doubtful that these members should be classified as a beginner which might discourage pure novices from entering at all.

The number of members, both beginners and experienced who
entered prints for the competition 21.10.08 was a little dissapointing.Had more who had registered as beginners entered prints, the results might have been somewhat different, but it is early days yet, both for the new system and the session, prehaps we should wait and see how things go for the next competition.

As we now only have four competitions per year making up the “league” waiting until the next competition to see how things go will mean half the league will be “settled “!
As has already been discussed elsewhere now that we no longer eliminate our two lowest scores, not entering just one competition eliminates a member from winning the “Best in Year”.
The lower than average entries perhaps speaks for itself about what many of the members views are about our competition procedures!!

An apology. I seem to have created a new "thread" with "Beginners/Experienced Split" when my original intention was to add this to Maggie's pre-existing "Competition Beginners Classification".
I have been reading the posts since this topic was opened and I feel the time has come to end this discussion as it seems to be going nowhere.
Main negative : members reminding us that they voted against this trial proposal at he last AGM. It seems to me that they must have been in the minority!
Main positive : the suggestion that an experienced member makes a quick critique of the entries while we wait for the results to be announced (perhaps by one who has no entry in the relevant competition). This is not without its potential downside but worth a try???
