I think we have to run with it. Maybe bring the subject up at the AGM. At the moment I still haven't changed my opinion that it wasn't a good idea. We didn't even have a prize or acknowledgement for the best beginner last night.

Ian has made a valid point. Yes, another one.

The judge ran through the "beginners" first, tthen the "advanced". Only the Advanced top score won that trophy.

I still disagree with the whole situation. As I have mentioned to some people I am helping out a couple of student photographers. If I think the stuff they are showing me is not up to par, I tell them. I don't make allowances for the fact that they've only been shooting for a couple of years and have never won a competition.

I disagree that the main criteria for a beginner is someone who hasn't won a competition. There has now been two "Best beginner" distinctions been made by judges/results announcers.

SO, are the best beginners still going to be beginners next year, since they didn't actually win the competition?

I am beginning to feel that if we MUST have seperate beginners and advanced in the marking, then we should have the same in the prizes.

John you should know by now all Ian's points are valid except the ones he makes re me hehehe!!!

My 2p worth is that someone (some people) perhaps the External Competition Selection Group should decide (there is plenty of experience to make an informed decision in the current group)what constitutes a beginner and who they are - it is only fair that the same person/people decide for everyone then everyone is equally judged and we start from an even playing field - if you get my drift.

The last person who should decide is the individual photographer themselves..............

I firmly agree that allowances should not be made depending on how long they have been shooting or if they have ever won a competition.

Critique's made with these kind of criteria are meaningless!

I have posted elsewhere some of the things I omitted to say last night. I wish to add here that while I was critiquing the images I was unaware which ones were Beginners entries and viewed each of the entries the same. I have to say that when I viewed the entry as a whole, there were no obvious beginners and for that set of images each one scored to the same standard, I awarded a better mark and gave a better critique than some in the “Non-beginners section.

Well done to those members!

Don't think it is possible to use a different marking system re beginners/experienced. Last night may have been a disservice to the beginners judging by the final marks.
