In this black and white photo editing tutorial, I share my method in Adobe Lightroom for processing impactful black and white images. We take a colour photo and I walk you through all of the steps I take to ensure a quality black and white conversion.

Ray shows you how easy it is to fix your photographs using a free app called FastStone Image Viewer - it's like the Poor Man's Photoshop, but it's actually amazing value and simple to learn. Quickly learn the following basic adjustments most photos need:

Open or create jpg or TIFF

Use curves and colour/contrast to adjust tones (forget the colours)

Choose Grayscale

If not to your liking undo and repeat

You can add SilverEfex Pro to FastStone using “Edit With the external program”

Use a preset of your choice and add and adjust control points

B&W Filters

  • Yellow

    • Brings out clouds, and darkens blue skies. Greens yellows, oranges and reds are rendered lighter

  • Red

    • Blue skies are black, flowers have a greater tonal difference between flowers and foliage

  • Orange

    • Gives results between yellow and red

  • Green

    • Lightens foliage

  • Blue

    • Lightens blues, darkens yellows, oranges and reds. Gives separation with a mix of colour
